To insert a disc (Top-Load type drive): While the DVD writer is powered up, first press the STOP button on top cover to stop disc from spinning. Slide OPEN latch to the right to release the top cover. Place the disc, label side up, into the drive and make sure the center of the disc is aligned with the spindle.

Hi LoriLitton, You just need to plug your external DVD player, open it, and insert your DVD disc, on the computer, open Windows Media Player (if you don't have a shortcut, you can type on the star menu to find it) and in the left menu you select the DVD disc you just inserted.
